For many hundreds of years, the stories of mythical beasts and mythical creatures have captivated our hearts. These stories are well-known over the globe as they are usually told through TV, movies, books, and other media channels. Sometimes, such myth beasts are nothing but symbolic, offering us clues regarding a culture’s values, desires, or fears. For other cultures, stories about mythical creatures are only made up to instill fear in the hearts of disobedient children.

However, it has been noticed that people are instantly attracted to stories of mythical beasts no matter where such stories originate from. Here are ten myth beasts and what you should know about their origin.

Fairies

These are also known as fae, fey or faeries. Their stories are of French descent and date back to many centuries ago. These invisible beings or supernatural creatures are not only limited to French legends, but seem to cut across several stories, legends, and myths. They have remained familiar even until this day.

Whenever the stories of fairies are brought up, people mostly cast their minds back to magical creatures with small wings; a sight mostly common with Disney movies.

Gorgon

Myth Beasts

This is one mythical creature that seems to resonate more with Greek culture. According to legends, Gorgons were very much similar to Medusa in that they had the power to change their victims to stone by merely looking at them. The Gorgons have been depicted in many movies as creatures that have snakes in place of hair on their heads. They are just as frightening as they are beautiful. The moral behind the Gorgon is that we should not be deceived by beauty. Someone can be beautiful, yet their heart is full of evil.

Mermaid

All the stories we have heard about Mermaids are nothing short of captivating. These supposedly half-fish and half-human creatures seem to have a place in the history of Babylon. They are mostly featured in a number of mythologies, including Greek, Polynesian, and Syrian mythologies. A lot of cultures describe mermaids as beautiful creatures with highly romantic abilities. In contrast, other cultures have other views about them, as they are actually depicted as wicked creatures and are understood to bring disaster upon the people they meet.

Aqrabuamelu

This monstrous creature is equally known as the scorpion man. It is a creature that can be traced back to most Babylonian myths. This creature reflects that of a man and scorpion. The body is made up of a scorpion, while the other parts are that of a man. Although they look extremely frightening in their appearance, their biggest responsibility is to fight with creatures that are not humans. They have also been described to offer help to travelers whose lives may be in danger.

Centaurs

The Centaur is one other creature that has both human and animal parts. They have the chest of a man, while the body is that of a horse. Centaurs are widely described as being violent. But, even that there was one that was believed to be extremely wise. Much wiser than you would imagine. For instance, he is believed to be behind the wisdom of many Greek characters.

Fauns

This is a myth that was imported or borrowed from the Greeks. Fauns are also referred to as goat men. Their upper body is that of a man, while the other parts look every inch as that of a goat. Legends have it that they also have pointed ears and horns. They are depicted as guardians whose job is to give advice to people who travel from time to time.

Werewolf

There are so many stories surrounding the origin of werewolves. Of all the stories, the commonest stories could be linked to Slavic Europe, German pagans, and Greek mythologies. Even though their origin dates back to hundreds of centuries according to those stories, they have managed to remain popular in some cultures today.

As we all know, werewolves have the ability to change from humans to wolves. Having said that, other stories may have a different version of how these creatures take their form. For instance, the issue of changing only when there’s a full moon may exist for some cultures, but may not exist for others.

Loch Ness Monster

This legend is much older than many of us know. They are believed to have originated from somewhere in Scotland. Scottish folklore is no stranger to mythical creatures that live in water, with the Nessie being the commonest of them all. From the descriptions given, the Loch Ness Monster looks like a dinosaur that lives in water. Unfortunately, the creatures are only thought of as a myth because the different eye witness accounts don’t corroborate themselves. But, like you have it in many cultures and places, people still believe these creatures exist. No matter what you tell them, that is their stance.

Phoenix

The Phoenix is an eagle-like creature. Legends have it that they normally turn into flames when they get to the end of their lifecycle. It has been described as sun god that is worshipped in not only Egypt, but also in other places. The Phoenix is used as a symbol of resurrection, immortality, and eternity. This supposedly large bird with golden feathers can live for many hundred years as historians claim.

Unicorn

This creature looks like a horse or a goat, and usually has one conspicuous horn on its foreheads. At least, that is how they are described by most myths. Unicorns are fascinating creatures that look majestic according to the myths. They are also mentioned in the Bible in a number of verses. Besides being majestic in nature, unicorns were believed to have healing abilities. For instance, if you used a unicorn made cup to drink something, you would not be harmed by poisons. That is what most people believe about unicorns.

Conclusion

There are so many creatures we know today because of the stories we have heard. There is no real proof whether they exist or not.
